Bill Belichick is taking it to another level and that’s a good sign for Patriots fans. Belichick is the best situational coach in the business and him being in a good mood doesn’t mean he’s slipping.
This week, Belichick has turned the heat up at the Patriots indoor practices to simulate what it will be like in the fourth quarter in a domed stadium. The Super Bowl isn’t just any game, it’s the biggest game, and it’s been shown time and time again that a team could very well leave its game in the locker room.
If the Patriots get too jacked up, they run the risk of tiring themselves out and burning that adrenaline like cheap gas, running on empty down the stretch.
After playing in domes for 3 of 4 super bowls (New Orleans, Houston, and Arizona), the one noticeable difference is that the Patriots faded late in the games. Factor in the AFC Championship when almost half the team caught the flu on the way back from San Diego and Bill Polian turned the heat up that made the Patriots wither like cheap toilet paper getting wet.
Belichick also had the team take a halftime break during practice to simulate the half hour duration of the halftime show. We wonder if he made them listen to Madonna's new album (now there’s a serious test of mental toughness).
Belichick is indeed on the top of his game. He had the Patriots in Indianapolis on Sunday and was able to get a padded practice in before the New York Giants even arrived.
He’s been laid back, setting the tone for his team, getting them prepared and not paralyzed by the moment. We could be wrong, but we have that feeling from the old Patriots, maybe it’s the underdog tag we haven’t had in a long time. Vegas has them favorites, but listen to any tv/radio broadcast and they'll tell you different.
Bill Belichick has a track record of putting together great game plans when his team is considered to be inferior. Given that fact, along with two weeks of preparation, how can you bet against him?
