Eat Pray Love (2010)
Starring: Julia Roberts, Javier Bardem, James Franco
This film plays out like a trilogy of stories (see title). Newly divorced Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) travels the world in search of herself. Her broken ex-husband (underplayed by Billy Crudup) is left behind, utterly confused and resentful (we think).
In Italy, Liz finds temporary contentment in the beauty of Rome (and in its pasta). In India, she works out her spiritual kinks and befriends a brusque talking Texan named Richard, a fellow seeker-of-inner-enlightenment (awkwardly played by Richard Jenkins). In Bali she encounters love and romance with Felipe (Javier Bardem mugs this), but her recurring doubts and self-loathing return.
This would have been a more amusing and meaningful journey had the acting measured up. While a couple of supporting performances raised the bar, some key actors' performances dragged the movie down.
To elaborate on all of the components of this production would be pointless because nothing stands out. Character development feels reluctant as none of the principals evoke strong sympathy. Julia Roberts grins and frowns throughout this watered down drama. The sum of all of its parts is dull.
The movie actually debriefs itself at the ending, with the main character, Liz Gilbert, voicing over as she describes her new found rules for life. Thanks for sharing.
