Billy Joe Daugherty – The 360° Life

billyjoe Billy Joe Daugherty was a much beloved pastor in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was known for his Bible Institutes, his work at Oral Roberts University, and the charity ministries his church developed in their city. Outside of Oklahoma Daugherty gained a following by his radio and TV program, Victory in Jesus.

In November of 2009 Daugherty died of lymphoma at just 57 years of age. He left behind a wife and four children who were a testament to his care, and thousands of people who had been the fruit of his efforts in the Kingdom.

Earlier in 2009 Daugherty presented a 13 episode program on the TBN network called 360 Degree Life. It included interviews and stories along with Billy Joe’s preaching. The contents of that program have been reproduced in book form, in many ways being a final message to the world of Daugherty’s mission.

Those who loved Daugherty will look fondly on this book. It is easy to read the chapter with Billy Joe’s soothing voice in your head. It is a nice, lasting tribute.

For those who aren’t familiar with Daugherty this book may not rate as many stars. The premise of the book is that the reader would be presented with ten ways to live move richly, deeply, fully. I didn’t connect with the formula and could often feel the threads of the Word of Faith movement binding these pages together. Here are the chapter titles:

  1. Resurrection
  2. Overcoming Fear and Anxiety
  3. You Can Make a Difference
  4. The Power of Your Words
  5. Courage During Change and Uncertainty
  6. Hearing God's Voice
  7. What God Thinks of You
  8. Rising Above Your Circumstances
  9. Second Chances
  10. Restoration
  11. Giving Thanks
  12. Pressing On
  13. The Promise of Eternity

The best element of the book were the testimonies. There are some good, encouraging stories to read. Yet in the end, the book felt like a scripted, religious TV program. If I hadn’t been motivated to read it because of Daugherty’s passing, I probably wouldn’t have been interested in this book. Ultimately I didn’t feel the book adequately covers the full circle of following Jesus, it just presented a scrumptious slice of Tulsa flavored pie.
