Driven by fluctuations in oil prices, and seduced by the prospect of easing climate change, experts are ramping up efforts to squeeze fuel out of a promising new organism: pond scum. As it turns out, algae -- slimy, fast-growing and full of fat -- is gaining ground as a potential renewable energy source. Experts say it is intriguing for its ability to gobble up carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, while living happily in places that aren't needed for food crops. Algae likes mosquito-infested swamps, for example, filthy pools, and even waste water. And while no one has found a way to mass produce cheap ... Read Full Story

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said Friday it would approve biofuels for commercial flights by 2010 in a bid to drastically reduce the industry's carbon footprint. Paul Steele, who heads IATA's environmental initiatives, told reporters in New Delhi biofuel would be certified "by the end of next year". Certification is widely regarded as a first technical step that could eliminate some of the investment uncertainties clouding the use of high quality biofuels in aviation. "For the first time, air transport has the possibility of an alternative to traditional jet fuel," said IATA chief executive Giovanni Bisignani. IATA estimates aviation biofuel could reduce carbon ... Read Full Story

Many vehicles run on diesel fuels these days, but with the growing trend toward environmentally safer fuels for vehicles, do diesel vehicle owners have any other alternative fuels?  The answer is a resounding Yes they do!  It’s called bio-diesel and it’s making a big impact in the fuel industry. Bio-diesel is a cleaner burning, alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. Bio-diesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel, to create a bio-diesel blend. Bio-diesel can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines, with little or no modifications needed. Bio-diesel is simple to use, bio-degradable, nontoxic, and essentially ... Read Full Story

We have come along way in developing societies that have electricity and the power necessary to fuel vehicles and for industry to be successful. All of these efforts though rely upon the use of energy source that comes from fossil fuels. They are found in the ground and have to be processed in order for us to have that fuel and that electricity. They are known as coal, natural gas, and fuel. We rely on them way too much for our own good and that is why change is so important. The problem though is that our dependence on it continues to grow. As ... Read Full Story
