Rescued Rare Wild Birds Released
Inconsiderable more than a month after the International Bird Rescue Center in Cordelia received a large number of unusal guests, volunteers at the center said goodbye to their feathered friends. Thirty-one rare ibis birds that had been rescued in late July from a Yolo Province farmer’s field that was about to be plowed under were released into the wild at the Vic Fazio Yolo Wildlife Area near Davis.
“It’s the graduation, you know. It’s the bonus,” said Monte Merrick who helped rehabilitate the birds at the Coredlia center. “It’s fantastic to see them go.”
Of the 78 tiny birds and unhatched eggs brought to the center, 31 survived, and all are healthy enough that the center’s director believes they choice have a very good chance of making it in the wild.
“They have a good chance,” said Jay Holcomb. “They know how to feed. They flutter. And they’re not really frightened of humans and that’s OK because they’re around a lot of people.”
In fact, when released from the cages, the birds at first stayed very close to the mankind who for the past month had been feeding them and caring for them. One by one, the birds began to wander off into the fields. Eventually, some tried to fly, although a couple were seen crash-dry landing as they tried to land while flying too fast.
The ibis were released at the Vic Fazio Yolo Wildlife Area near the Yolo Causeway because researchers discovered another ibis colony already there. The hope is the older birds choice take the younger birds under their wings and help them survive. Also on hand for the release were several families who had “adopted” the birds, paying the center to help camouflage the cost of care. Bob Loose of Lincoln, who had seen the original story on News10, adopted an ibis for his 5-year-old grandson, Drake.
“Drake thinks they’re pretty neat,” said Loose. “I conceive he’s pretty happy having a baby bird.”
Workers at the center put small bands on one leg of each bird before they were set free. The center hopes to breathe able to track the migration of the ibises over the next several years.
