The counts began at the beginning of the 20th century when American ornithologist, Frank Chapman, looking for a way to counter what was then an American tradition, a Christmas bird "shoot.) The 10X means you see the object 10 times the size it is. The 32 means the size of the lens opening, 32 mm. You can see more about what these numbers mean here. Gold ... Read Full Story

My mom has turned into a little bit of a birder in her old age, and she faithfully refills her feeders. While there we saw American Goldfinches, Mourning Doves, House Sparrows, a Northern Cardinal, and some others. We also visited my Aunt and Uncle, and they had even more at their feeders: Downey Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Dark-eyed...

Although the James M. Robb Colorado River State Park is one of the most unique parks in Colorado, and the one that gets the most local notoriety, it’s not the only state park in the Happy Valley. Highline Lake State Park north of the Loma metroplex is a great place to escape, especially this time of year when there’s NO ONE around.

Then Joe will take you into the woods to call owls in for actual sightings. There is a good possiblility that you will see an Eastern Screech Owl and maybe even a Great Horned Owl, whose courtship period begins at this time of year. This walk...

While in rural parts of New Jersey or the Delmarva Peninsula I have occasionally seen large starling flocks, numbering perhaps in the low thousands.
