Bjork's long-awaited return

Icelandic songstress Bjork remains a polarizing icon, even years after she stepped out of the studio. Known more among casual music fans as girl who wore a swan dress at the 2001 Academy Awards, her music seems to subside from her public reputation.

For her fans, however, the release of her first two new singles "Crystalline" and "Cosmogony," which found it's way around the internet earlier this week, an aura of anticipation has begun to rise.

Her new album Biophilia isn't only the first new work in nearly four years, but is a daring new marketing ploy as well. The album (due out September 26) is set to be released in multiple formats, including as an actual Apple app. Her director Alex Poots noted in a March article with The Guardian that Biophilia will be the world's "first app album," allowing the user to interact with the actual material. There will also be live performances, a stage show, and a standard CD for the album as well. In all, the release is expected to reimagine the way the music industry presents newer projects to marketing demographics.

"I've always been aware that vinyl or CDs are not the only way," Bjork noted in a July 22 interview with Billboard. "Both are very short-lived formats if you look at how long music has been around.

What exatly Biophilia will amount to when it's released is still an eager mystery. The first app of the project was released this week, but much of it is just an introduction to the massive project.

You can pre-order the entire work or just select parts here, before the September release.
