Repatriation and Reparations
Israel has received billions of dollars annually since the late 1940s as reparations for the attempted extermination of their ethnic/religious group by German Christian Aryans during World War II. With these reparations, Israel has been able to construct a western-style civilization with modern housing complexes known as settlements, to house repatriated Jews. These settlements are funded by reparations paid for decades to Israel by Germany, Russia, France and the USA. According to a 1990s report in TIME Magazine, these reparations amounted to US$7 billion annually.
Meanwhile, Europeans like to think they were bringing the beacon to the ‘savages’ of Africa, but the truth is that Africans were developing commercial empires and complex urban societies long before these Europeans thought of exploring the world. Hot on the heels came the representatives of European powers, who began the infamous ‘scramble for Africa’, vying with each other to exploit real resources for their sovereigns, and they continue to do so even to this day. At the Berlin Conference of 1884–85, most of Africa was split neatly into colonies. France and Britain got the biggest swathes, with Germany, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Belgium picking up bits and pieces. Slavery holocausts, forced labor, heavy taxation, swift and vengeful violence for any insurrection were all characteristics of the slavery and colonial administrations. Some of the Africans were slaved and taken to lands far away from home. All African territories were essentially organized to extract cheap cash crops and natural resources for use by the colonial powers. And to facilitate easy administration; tribal differences and rivalries were exploited to the full. Africans who refused to assimilate to the culture of their overlords were kept out of the market economy and the education system. The effects of the colonial years, which in some cases only ended a few decades ago, continue to leave their mark on the continent. So now the question comes:-
Is repatriation and reparations OK for the descendants of the holocausts Israeli Jews, but not for the descendants of Africans and African Americans? How can U.S & the rest of the world deal with reparation for blacks of African and African Americans descendants? What are your thoughts?
