On Tuesday September 6th, a Chatham County Judged signed a death warrant for Troy Davis. He is set to be executed on Wednesday, September 21st at 7:00 PM.
Troy was convicted in 1991 for the 1989 murder of Savannah Police Officer Mark MacPhail. Mr. Davis was convicted on the basis of testimony from 9 eyewitnesses; there was no physical evidence. Since then, 7 of the nine witnesses have recanted their testimony, often citing police coercion for their original testimony. Of the two witnesses not recanting, one has been identified by others as having been involved in the shooting. Mr. Davis has appealed through the legal process but has been hampered by a post-conviction system that seems to care more about process, than justice.
At this stage, Mr. Davis has no legal appeals left. All that stands between him and execution is a clemency hearing in front of the Board of Pardons and Paroles next Monday, September 19th.
Take Action
There are several things you can do immediately to try and spare Troy's life:
More than anything, please keep Troy, his family and the family of Officer MacPhail in your prayers during this difficult time.
ACTION SUGGESTED:
Please contact the members of the State Board of Pardons and Paroles BEFORE the clemency hearing, which is set for Monday, September 19, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. In Georgia, the Board, not the Governor, has sole authority for granting clemency to inmates. The Board may commute a death sentence to life without parole, to life or deny clemency. In your letter, please request that the Board of Pardons and Paroles grant clemency to Mr. Davis.
The best method of contact is to write an individual letter to each member of the Board:
