Stop Selling 'em and Start SORTING 'em!!
This is one of the most important topics black women in network marketing should understand. When it comes to prospecting for new distributors or consultants, so many of us make the mistake of "selling" our business opportunity, products or services. It is no wonder so many of our friends so NO to our business opportunity, most are under the impression that you have to become a door-to-door sales person, professional telemarketer or ask the world to host a party for them! Here is the rule all African American women building a network marketing business should live by:
"We sort and we market! We do not sell!!
Yes, I know that when it is all said and done, products or services are sold and a sales process takes place.
I also realize that, in most network marketing companies, the commission and bonus checks are based on the sales volume of the consultant or distributor. Let me explain what I mean by, "We sort and market, we do not sell".
At some point in your business you will meet or may even sponsor a "Sales Superstar". This is the person that jumps in head first and sponsors like crazy, adding maybe 10 or 20 people to their group within their first month. You are overjoyed and excited, and you think you have just hit the MLM jackpot!!
However, most "Sales Superstars" can't be duplicated. Most of the new people your superstar added can't do what she did! The Superstar is frustrated and can't understand WHY she was able to sponsor so many new consultants and her new people can't. Even worst, most are dropping off like flies; quitting before they even get started. This is the main reason why it is imperative for you to have an effective SYSTEM for your new people to follow once they sign up. Systems are semi-duplicatable because they put everyone on the same playing field. We are all doing the same thing, therefore, all the new people have a fair chance of building a large and lucrative network marketing business. I say semi-duplicatable because...people don't join a company, they join YOU! If you have a more outgoing and magnetic personality then your new consultant, just following the system may not render her the same results as yours. The new consultant will need to work on her self confidence and ability to talk to people AND follow the system to be on the same playing field as you. This can certainly be accomplished by reading books and listening to CDs that train on building self confidence and belief. My favorite direct sales trainer, Randy Gage, has great materials to help build self confidence in anyone, I'll share those with you in a minute.
In the end, when it comes to "selling" your business opportunity, your results will depend mostly on YOU...Do you have personal value to offer your prospect if they join? Are you a leader in their eyes? Will they gain power by associating with you? Will they be supported and trained properly if they join you and your team?
These are the things that will make the difference in your prospecting efforts, NOT what your company offers or your compensation plan. It all about YOU!! Even if you are a brand new consultant, people will still join you because they like YOU and believe by joining you now they have something to gain.
So how do you know when you are selling so you can avoid it?
The moment your start explaining anything...you are selling. If you start talking about the product and the price, you are selling? If you start detailing the ingredients and how it can help them, you are selling. If you start to explain the compensation plan, you are selling. DON'T DO IT!
The best way to think of yourself is as a professional MARKETER or PROMOTOR for your company. It is your job to hand out as much informational and marketing tools to as many people as you can about your business opportunity and/or products. That is all you must do, this is your job. The informational and marketing tools you are getting into the hands of all these people will explain everything to them. The materials you get out to others will do the selling for you! You may give them a Website, CD, DVD, Brochure or even a phone number to listen to a recorded opportunity call. They do all the hard work for you!!! There is no need to know everything about your product, service or business opportunity. Over time, you will probably become an expert on all of these things, and it doesn't hurt. But even then, let the company's marketing materials sell your business opportunity or products for you. The tools will sell the business and product for you. You just need to concentrate on selling you as a leader.
I once read a great example in my Magnetic Sponsoring course by Mike Dilliard. Here it is; "You could take a 50 year old, 5th generation farmer and put him to work in the field with some hand tools or you can take a kid from New York, and stick him in a tractor. Who will be able to harvest the bigger crop?"
The important thing to remember is to let your marketing tools do the sorting and selling for you.
It is a waste of time worrying about people that don't "get it". You should never worry why your friend or famiky member didn't join you in the business, this is not your concern and it is their life. Your only concern is to give them the opportunity to get it or not. Your job is to simply provide them with the information to make a decision to say yes or no.
All you are doing with each person you expose to your business or product is creating an opportunity for something good to happen. The person you expose may or may not join your business or buy your product.
Concentrate on the activity required, marketing or promoting your business or product by providing the tools to your prospect. When you utilize an effective system to introduce people to you business with information and marketing tools, you are sorting. The person will let YOU know if THEY are interested in going further by purchasing or joining. Once you SORT, you will be able to share more details later.
Remember; people join people they like, know and trust. People don't join your company because of the company, they join because of YOU. Do what you need to do to become the type of person people want to be around and learn from. Study, Study, Study. Let industry and company tools SELL, all you have to do is SORT by getting the materials into lots of hands!!! They will tell you if they are interested in knowing more"-)
