The Sounders second match against visting New York Redbulls ended in disappointment. An early goal from Kandji in the 21st minute stunned the Sounders and left them trailing for the remainder of the match.
The Sounders dominated the game with seventeen shots and twelve corner kicks but were unable to break through. Despite the dominating play, the passing from Seattle was sloppy. Both Levesque and Riley struggled to get off good passes and Brad Evans appeared to be a step behind the play.
Fredy Montero was also an absence, rarely going in for contact and getting minimal time on the ball. The most heartbreaking part of the match however was watching the Sounders’ set plays. Despite a record twelve corner kicks, not one ended up in a goal. This is where the Sounders will struggle until the arrival of Swiss international Blaise Nkufo in the summer following the World Cup.
Nkufo as a tall, physical goal-scorer will hopefully help the Sounders put some goals in out of the air and prevent further mishaps like this past game against New York.
That said, the Sounders defense for the most part was in fine form despite the one goal. Leo Gonzalez, Kasey Keller and Tyrone Marshall showed real effort in the back and Hurtado and Alonso as always were consistent.
Likewise, Zakuani again showed he has grown and matured as a player and new signing Pat Noonan made an immediate impact after his late addition in the second half. Perhaps this was to make up for the lack of intensity that plagued the rest of the attack.
