  Twister

  (1996-2008) PG-13 | DVD | HD-DVD | Blu-Ray In this dizzying, effects-driven drama, two scientists (Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton) chase tornadoes in their quest to record and study them. Taking a backseat to the wild and visually mesmerizing storms are subplots concerning a failing marriage, childhood trauma and corporate ethics. The film received multiple Academy Awards for its spectacular sound and visual effects (including the famous flying cow).

  27 Dresses (2007)

  Tired of being a perpetual bridesmaid after helping 27 friends tie the knot, altruistic Jane (Katherine Heigl) finds herself facing her worst nightmare as her younger sister (Malin Akerman) announces her engagement to the man Jane secretly adores. But when Jane meets the charming Kevin (James Marsden), will she beat her sibling to the altar? Edward Burns and Judy Greer also star in this breezy romantic comedy from director Anne Fletcher.   The Diving Bell and The Butterfly (2007)

  (a.k.a. Le Scaphandre et le papillon) In 1995, author and Elle magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby suffered a stroke that put him in a coma; he awakened mute and completely paralyzed. Mathieu Amalric stars in this adaptation of Bauby’s autobiography, which he dictated by blinking. Julian Schnabel was nominated for the 2008 Best Director Oscar and won the Golden Globe in the same category for his poignant film about the strength of the human spirit. DVD and Blu-Ray. ()

  Charlie Wilson’s War (2007)

  Texas congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) sets a series of earth-shaking events in motion when he conspires with a rogue CIA operative (Philip Seymour Hoffman, in an Oscar-nominated role) to aid Afghan mujahedeen rebels in their fight against the Soviet Red Army. Julia Roberts, Emily Blunt and Amy Adams co-star in this fact-based political thriller directed by Mike Nichols and based on George Crile’s 2003 book by the same name. DVD. Maxim’s Review.  

  Juno (2007)

  Facing an unplanned pregnancy, teenage Juno (Ellen Page) devises a plan to locate the proverbial perfect parents to adopt her baby. But the seemingly ideal couple Juno chooses still has some growing up to do. Now, everyone in Juno’s world must do a little soul-searching. Michael Cera co-stars while Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner play the pair of affluent yuppies anxious for a child in this offbeat coming-of-age comedy, which won the 2008 Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.   John C. Reilly stars as fictional pop star Dewey Cox in this parody of the increasingly predictable rags-to-riches music biopic. On his hard-knocks journey toward stardom, Dewey crosses paths with the likes of Elvis, Buddy Holly and the Beatles. Before long, Dewey is writing hits, making women swoon and doing food endorsements — in between over-the-top moments of silliness, which producers Jake Kasdan and Judd Apatow are so adept at creating. DVD and Blu-Ray.  

  Lions for Lambs

  Robert Redford directs and stars in this complex look at America’s war on terror, a three-pronged narrative of lives connected by politics and bloodshed. While a Washington bigwig (Tom Cruise) goes toe to toe with a reporter (Meryl Streep) on the issue of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, an idealistic professor (Redford) tries to keep his students engaged as two of his former pupils struggle to survive behind enemy lines in the Middle East. DVD and Blu-Ray.  

  Sense & Sensibility Collector’s Set (Sense & Sensibility 2008 / Miss Austen Regrets / Persuasion 2007)

  When her young niece (Imogen Poots) enlists her help in finding a husband, novelist Jane Austen (Olivia Williams) — who shunned marriage for life as a single woman — takes stock of her own romantic past. Greta Scacchi and Samuel Roukin also star in this made-for-television “Masterpiece Theatre” drama based on Austen’s life and her actual correspondence with friends, family and would-be suitors. DVD.  

  There Will Be Blood

  At the turn of the 20th century, Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis, in an Oscar-winning role) becomes a tycoon when he buys the oil rights to a Texas family’s ranch.
