So, borris johnson and his crazy hairstyle won this mayor election. I would have voted for him if i was actually old enough to vote, but i’m not so i didn’t Hopefully he’ll be a better mayor than the last one (yes, i really don’t have a clue who that was.. i’m thinking George Bush or Tony Blaire?) From Thursday's thelondonpaper: According to experts, 2008 has already given the English language more than 100 new words, ranging from the common "credit crunch" to "glamping" - to describe posh camping. Top of the list is "Cripes!" meaning surprise or shock, synonymous with Boris Johnson. Where do I start? We've already had the discussion on whether 'credit crunch' is a word , so I'll leave that to one side. But is BoJo really synonymous with surprise or shock? And who else here knew of 'cripes' (with or without initial cap and exclamation) before 2008? Thelondonpaper adds: [Cripes] has joined a list of other words ... Read Full Story

Boris Johnson Lord Mayor of London Well if you said to Dick Whittingham that he was not going to be Lord Mayor of London because he was beaten in the polls by Boris Johnson I think he would have packed his cat, bag and stick and set off for Paris instead. What He is Saying Boris is saying he will tackle crime on public transport let's just hope he is as good at metaphorical tackling as he is at the real thing. If he can stumble through the elections not really knowing what he is doing and then in one accidental moment of brilliance ... Read Full Story

From the excellent Press Gazette: "The newly-elected Conservative mayor described the move as the first attempt to cut “unnecessary funding” of the Mayor’s Office's publicity budget. Johnson's office claims the Mayor's Office would have spent £2.9 million on the newspaper this year had Ken Livingstone been re-elected. The new administration pledged to use some of the money saved — around £1 million per year — to plant 10,000 trees in London's most deprived areas by 2012." More Read Full Story
London Mayor Boris Johnson was asked today to back the use of "bait bicycles" to snare persistent thieves. Campaigners said the electronically-tagged decoy bicycles were proving an excellent tactic for flushing out gangs who target valuable vehicles. Valerie Shawcross, a member of the London Assembly, said the mayor must take action to tackle the "massive volume" of cycle theft in the capital. She said the gadgets have already been used by...

Boris Johnson played down his have-a-go hero antics today, and received praise from an unlikely source. The Tory Mayor of London was congratulated for stepping in to save a woman under attack from a gang of girls armed with an iron bar, by Labour Justice Secretary Jack Straw. The pair put aside party rivalries to launch a scheme to help young offenders turn away from crime at Feltham young offenders' institution in west London. On Monday...

Does Boris Johnson have a superhero alter-ego? Buffoonish mayor of London by day, cycling vigilante by night?Environmentalist documentary maker Franny Armstrong would certainly argue that. Johnson swooped to her rescue yesterday, when she was pushed up against a car by a gang of girls -- she described them as "feral kids" -- wielding an iron pipe. Apparently he was cycling past and heard her cries for help. Reportedly calling the attackers...

(Ann "Babe" Huggett) - London's flamboyant, bike-commuting mayor, Boris Johnson, did something rather extraordinary earlier this week in that criminal paradise known as the UK where self-defense and "have-a-go heroes" face prosecution for stopping crimes before the police can get there purposely too late in order to just have to fill out paperwork. In the UK, where everyone basically quails before the whims of the violent, Boris Johnson...
