The London Mayor election is in the final week of internet campaigning. Online is playing an increasingly important role in the election strategy and there have been some interesting initiatives and developments, however the majority of prominent web trends tools still show Boris Johnson leading. Using Yahoo! Site Explorer it is possible to examine candidates sites and see how many other sites are linking to them (this gives insight into popularity and also indicates campaign reach): Yahoo! I would have voted for him if i was actually old enough to vote, but i’m not so i didn’t Hopefully he’ll be a better mayor than the last one (yes, i really don’t have a clue who that was.. i’m thinking George Bush or Tony Blaire?) From Thursday's thelondonpaper: According to experts, 2008 has already given the English language more than 100 new words, ranging from the common "credit crunch" to "glamping" - to describe posh camping. Top of the list is "Cripes!" meaning surprise or shock, synonymous with Boris Johnson. Where do I start? We've already had the discussion on whether 'credit crunch' is a word , so I'll leave that to one side. But is BoJo really synonymous with surprise or shock? And who else here knew of 'cripes' (with or without initial cap and exclamation) before 2008? Thelondonpaper adds: [Cripes] has joined a list of other words ... Read Full Story

Boris Johnson Lord Mayor of London Well if you said to Dick Whittingham that he was not going to be Lord Mayor of London because he was beaten in the polls by Boris Johnson I think he would have packed his cat, bag and stick and set off for Paris instead. What He is Saying Boris is saying he will tackle crime on public transport let's just hope he is as good at metaphorical tackling as he is at the real thing. If he can stumble through the elections not really knowing what he is doing and then in one accidental moment of brilliance ... Read Full Story

From the excellent Press Gazette: "The newly-elected Conservative mayor described the move as the first attempt to cut “unnecessary funding” of the Mayor’s Office's publicity budget. Johnson's office claims the Mayor's Office would have spent £2.9 million on the newspaper this year had Ken Livingstone been re-elected. The new administration pledged to use some of the money saved — around £1 million per year — to plant 10,000 trees in London's most deprived areas by 2012." More Read Full Story

The Evening Standard reports that Boris Johnson is set to become the Tories’ first elected police commissioner. Chris Grayling told the paper: "We envisage the Mayor of London being the elected police commissioner. This would strengthen the role of the Mayor. However, I'm absolutely clear that no reform we introduce will allow any elected politician to interfere in operational policing and we will make absolutely certain that the independence...

Thanks to Helen for spotting this newly-written answer to a Darren Johnson question about the ACE London appointment fiasco. It confirms what my post of yesterday was hinting at - that Mayor Johnson will go ahead with a re-run of the process and will be announcing the details very soon. As Helen's fellow commenter DVIB observed, the schedule set out in the answer shows that Boris has every intention of honouring his barely-veiled pledge to...

Mayor of London once again uses Daily Telegraph column to part from official Conservative policyBoris Johnson has been at it again. David Cameron would no doubt like the mayor of London to use his weekly slot in the Daily Telegraph to defend Conservative party policy, but Boris often uses it set out a rival agenda and today's column includes a particularly intriguing example of him veering off-message.It's about the new 50p tax rate for top...

I recently reported on Camden New Journal's account of Mayor Johnson's celebrated and highly commendable rescue of Age of Stupid director Franny Armstrong from a group of aspiring young muggers. This had interested me because it contradicted every other account of the event in saying that Armstrong's assailants were boys, not girls. CNJ even quoted Armstrong saying so:"I was minding my own business, sending a text, when I heard three boys...
