by Eric Dondero I've known Brian Doherty (photo) for over 25 years. Brian was a young punk (literally), back in the early days of the University of Florida College Libertarians in Gainesville, circa 1986 - early 1990s. He hung around with Phil Blumel (now President of US Term Limits and Vice-Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus), Libertarian Republican blog writer Tom Walls, and Ivan Osorio (now with the Competitive Enterprise Institute.) During that time I was the leader of sorts, of the libertarian effort at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Brian is hardcore. He's a balls-to-the-wall Libertarian activist. Brian has served as a Senior ... Read Full Story

by Eric Dondero Many have credited Libertarian Bob Barr's candidacy with the selection of libertarian-leaning Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin by John McCain. Barr had been polling 6% in Zogby mid-Summer, as high as 11% in New Hampshire and 10% in Nevada. Sources inside the McCain Campaign have confirmed that a large reason Palin was selected was because of her libertarian appeal. This, of course, could be viewed as a huge victory for the Libertarian Party. Never before has the LP actually influenced a major-party VP pick. But now, at least one prominent conservative columnist is crediting Barr and the Libertarian Party for the Republican ... Read Full Story

Libertarian Republican blog is pleased to be the very first news source to proclaim that Bob Barr, Libertarian Presidential candidate, along with his running mate Wayne Allyn Root, have achieved an important goal. As of Sunday, the Libertarian ticket for 2008 has officially busted 500,000 votes total. With 99% of all precincts reporting, Libertarian Presidential candidate Bob Barr appeared well on his way to breaking the ever important barrier of Half a Million votes. CNN reported this morning the near final vote total: 499,912 However, the CNN total does not include results from Guam. Various sources have reported Barr's total in the Pacific Island ... SPECIAL GUEST EDITORIAL by Kevin Tracy Take a look at Zogby’s predictions. President Bush dominated the electoral map throughout most of 2004 except for a few fringe polls out of Ohio and Florida that showed President Bush losing. But here in 2008, Barack Obama is painting the country blue and purple. Even my home state of Indiana isn’t safe for the Republican Presidential candidate for the first time in over four decades! Part of the problem is Bob Barr, who is pulling between 5 and 10% in many of the competitive states that have gone heavy blue (like New Hampshire) and once safe Republican ... Read Full Story

Disgruntled Conservatives mad at McCain for not attacking Obama enough, might be switching Libertarian The LA Times is reporting a very recent rise in poll numbers for Libertarian Presidential candidate Bob Barr. From the Times : And over at Libertarian Bob Barr's Atlanta offices, they are almost ecstatic to report they are at 3% in Virginia. That's 3% total, not points behind. In Florida his campaign says they're just under 4% total, in Colorado just over and in Ohio all the way up to 5.2%. "Those states are vital for us," a brave fundraising letter proclaims, "as it is in those battleground states where ... Read Full Story
An interesting threesome -- Bob Barr, Grover Norquist and David Keene -- has released a statement endorsing the idea of civilian trials for terror suspects and calling for a stop to the fear-mongering from the right over civilian trials and transferring the Gitmo detainees to a regular American prison. I'm not surprised by Barr and Keene. Barr has abandoned many of his previous conservative positions in favor of libertarian positions over...

Bob Barr, the four term Republican Georgia congressman turned ACLU activist and 2008 Libertarian Presidential candidate, has denounced Rep. It doesn't quite have the ring of "Martin, Barton and Fish," but the three above-named conservatives -- David Keene, Grover Norquist and Bob Barr -- yesterday released a rather remarkable statement in support of the administration's decisions to transfer terrorism detainees to federal prisons and to try them in federal court. Ballot Access News has just learned that Pennsylvania is still distributing voter registration forms that don’t include any parties except the Democratic and Republican Parties. The time is right for Silicon Valley -- style progressivism to woo independents into a political force under the Libertarian Party banner. Here's how.If the two-party system is ever going to be seriously challenged, this is the moment. The GOP, the stall-tactic party, is reeling. The Democratic administration is struggling to turn around the economy. And across the country, creative, engaged folks are increasingly feeling politically homeless...

But with a few notable exceptions, that strategy hasn't really panned out. But now Fast Company magazine has arrived at the same conclusion from the rich geek's perspective: If Libertarians want...
