“McDonnell wants the airports authority to accept his new board appointees, which have so far been blocked from the board as part of a legal fight. And he wants to make sure the second phase of the rail line, which will extend from Reston to Loudoun County, doesn’t mandate union labor, which the governor says defies Virginia’s right-to-work laws.
“It isn’t the first time McDonnell has threatened to withhold money in exchange for more power on a local transportation board. The governor recently threatened to withhold $50 million of Metro funding and wound up gaining a new seat on the transit board.”
This project was ill-conceived and will cost taxpayers billions by the time it’s all said and done. Whenever a public works project gives a cost estimate, you can probably double that to get an accurate representation of what it will cost. The government is too stupid to realize construction companies low-ball their bids in order to get the contracts. When the money runs out they know they will just be given more because the government can’t have unfinished projects on the books. They have to justify those costs to taxpayers. Flushing money down the toilet on incomplete projects doesn’t look so good. The Dulles Metrorail project is projected to cost upwards of $6 billion, but you can count on that going much higher.
I’m glad Bob McDonnell isn’t caving to union pressure and the incompetence of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. These are the same geniuses who thought it was a good idea to flippantly spend $330 million on an underground station at Dulles Airport just to make it a few yards closer to the terminal. Luckily that ridiculous plan was abandoned after pressure continued to mount.
Sadly, this financial suckhole will continue to bring down the state.
