Bob Mercer, a music industry legend who helped make EMI one of the four major record labels and went on to help launched the "NOW That's What I Call Music" franchise in the US, has passed away at the age of 65.
Bob Mercer (nytimes.com). Mercer began his career at General Food, before EMI hired him on to help shake up their marketing. There, he helped sign artists such as Queen, Kate Bush, and Olivia Newton-John. He eventually left the record, after becoming disillusioned when the label dropped The Sex Pistols.
In the mid-90s, he worked with Polygram to develop and market the "NOW That's What I Call Music" series in the US. It had already been succesful in the UK. To date, the series has generated global sales of over 200 million CDs.
