Watch: Primal Scream vs. Mark Stewart ‘Autonomia’

Primal Scream have collaborated with Mark Stewart, member of the late ’70s band Pop Group and ’80s group Maffia, for the latter’s latest agit-pop LP “The Politics of Envy,” due out March 26th on Future Noise Music. It’s a surprising bit of aggressive rock and roll with saw-like guitars, a funky bassline and beat, and the call-and-response vocals of Stewart and Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie in which they intone “Keepin’ the dream alive.”

Stewart had this to say about the track “Autonomia”:

I’d written this song about Carlo Giuliani, who was killed at the G8 demonstrations in Genoa. At that point, it was a protest song… afterwards I started getting on with Bobby and I asked Adrian [Sherwood] about doing it. It’s important that people hear about the story, it’s the message and the atmosphere as much as anything.

Primal Scream, for their part, have long been fans of Stewart and his music, stating, “Starting out as a teenager in the late 70s with the Pop Group and thru the 80′s with the Maffia up to his new solo record, Mark Stewart has led the attack on conformist reality. Mark is a constant inspiration and a true Thief of Fire. A poet of paranoia and a great laugh.”

The “Autonomia” music video was directed by Douglas Hart (founding member and bassist of The Jesus and Mary Chain) with Dominic Lee & Chiara Meattelli. Gillespie appears in the video along with Stewart himself.

‘Autonomia’ will be released as a single through Future Noise Music on February 20th.
