Russia and Chia veto Zimbabwe sanctions

Sadly, a proposal for sanctions against Zimbabwe has been voted down.

Sanctions can sometimes do more harm than good.

Take Iraq, when an embargo on medicine caused great hardship among innocent civilians.

But not in the case of Zimbabwe, where an arms embargo, an assets freeze and travel restrictions were proposed to put pressure on the despotic President Robert Mugabe.

The idea of anyone selling arms to Zanu-PF fills me with horror. An arms embargo should have already been in place. How Russia and China could disagree with an embargo and a ban on Mugabe and his chums leaving the country baffles me. South Africa, Libya and Vietnam also voted no.

The reason given, according to Bloomberg.com, was that the sanctions might jeopardize negotiations between Zanu-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change. Not really sure how. If the talks were between Mugabe and the UN, then perhaps.

Indonesia also abstained. It's not a vote over whether Mikey should leave the Big Brother house, Indonesia, it's whether a country should have restrictions placed on it. You either agree or disagree.

Zimbabwe's UN ambassador is of course as pleased as Punch.

Zimbabwe's UN ambassador said the UK and US had come up with unjustified reasons for the draft UN Security Council resolution.

Boniface Chidyausiku said he was happy to see what he called the "machinations" of the US, the UK and France failing.

It's also been reported that Chidyausiku accused the UK and America of racism. Surely it would be more racist not to condemn Mugabe because he is black.

Sanctions have their place, but they must not hurt the people of a country, only its leaders. In the meantime, I'd like to impose sanctions on prize chump Boniface Chidyausiku where he is spanked every time he talks out of a place other than his mouth.
