ISBN 9780385341004 The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Random House Reader's Circle) (Paperback)

Editorial Reviews for ISBN 9780385341004 From Publishers Weekly The letters comprising this small charming novel begin in 1946, when single, 30-something author Juliet Ashton (nom de plume Izzy Bickerstaff) writes to her publisher to say she is tired of covering the sunny side of war and its aftermath. When Guernsey farmer Dawsey Adams finds Juliet's name in a used book and invites articulate—and not-so-articulate—neighbors to write Juliet with their stories, the book's epistolary circle... Love, Death, Madness, and an American Biography

I've recently finished reading The Man Who Made Lists: Love, Death, Madness, and the Creation of Roget's Thesaurus , a biography of Mark Roget by the Boston-based writer Joshua Kendall. You have to love that title. The book made for a pacy read - partly because of Kendall's writing, partly because of Roget's surprisingly eventful life. In his twenties, for example, Roget was staying in French-occupied Geneva when war broke out between France and England; Napoleon ordered the imprisonment of... Read Full Story

Love Stories

John Gray, PhD, is known for his series of books focusing on the differences between men and women and how to use this knowledge to strengthen relationships. In Mars and Venus in Love , Gray shares the stories of couples he has worked with over the years and asks them to explain what types of problems they've had in their relationships and what works for them as far as communication and expressing love is concerned. It's essentially a book of love stories - a collection of true-life tales... Read Full Story

Max’s Dragon by Kate Banks

Max’s Dragon, written by Kate Banks and illustrated by Boris Kulikov, is the sequel to Max’s Words. Although it is not as well written as Max’s Words, it was still a good read. Lovable Max is back and he’s still using his words to have fun. I like this book but it didn’t hit me like the first one. I think if I would have read this one first, I would probably wouldn’t have been so hard on this one. When something is just good and not great like its predecessor (Max’s Words) it doesn’t go over... Read Full Story

Autobook Review: “Time for a Model Change:.."

All riled up and overstressed, the auto industry as it sails through the intimidating high tide of economic battery, alarmed and defensive automakers attempt to salvage the best out of the bad times. This also seems to be an opportune moment for a review of the industrial events as they unfold, and to gain insights in to the hows and whys. And then, to march ahead with a perked up grit, coupled with an approach that signifies a paradigm shift, perhaps. Authored by Graeme P. Maxton and John... Read Full Story

Steve Harvey’s new book

Steve Harvey’s new book, “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man”, was a very good read. In fact, I read it in two sittings. I got it from Costco yesterday afternoon and finished it yesterday night. I would recommend it with a word of caution- Don’t read it if you get easily offended because if you know Steve Harvey, then you know that he does not bite his tongue. He tells it like it is. That’s what I really liked about it. I know the information in the book because I have talked to my husband... Read Full Story

Book Review: Faith & Doubt, by John Ortberg

My pastor is always quoting books by author John Ortberg, so I was really excited when I was offered the chance to review his latest, Faith & Doubt . The topic was especially intriguing because it’s one that often stays in the closet. Most of us have probably had doubts about God at one point or another in our lives, but we feel ashamed about lacking faith and often keep it to ourselves, hoping it will pass. But, in Faith & Doubt , Ortberg assures us that doubt is not the opposite of faith... Read Full Story

Giveaway: Mealtime & Bedtime Sing & Sign

When my twins were little and started to show frustration at telling me what they wanted because their speech hadn’t yet caught up with their demands, I began to teach them how to use sign language. Since I had never used sign language before, we bought several videotapes designed to teach sign language to young children (and their parents). At first, the twins didn’t seem to get the “connection” between signing and communication merely by watching the videos, but as I continued to reinforce... Read Full Story
