As part of a broader public relations and lobbying push, Kazakhstan 's government paid Johns Hopkins University to author three reports about the country. The arrangement was brokered through APCO Worldwide , Kazakhstan's Washington DC lobbying firm. The Kazakh government paid $52,300 for reports titled "Kazakhstan's New Middle Class" and "Parliament and Political Parties in Kazakhstan." A third report, "Kazakhstan in its Neighborhood," was "also underwritten by the government," but lobbying reports that would disclose the amount paid for it are not yet available. The reports, issued by the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at Johns Hopkins, do not disclose the Kazakhstan funding. Institute director S. ... Read Full Story

While Borat may appear to be a dismal one-disc performance, it does pack a little bit of heat onto only one DVD. I was disappointed a few months back when I found out that the Borat DVD would only contain one disc. I wasn't sure of the reasoning behind Fox's decision to skimp out on DVD content and it frustrated me. The film had been created a huge controversy, been a box office success, and won a few prestigious awards along the way. Knowing the way the film was shot there were bound to be a truckload of extras that could have been collected ... Read Full Story

Quasi-queer movies such as Bruno and Humpday are late to the game, while Nia Vardalos’ rom-com, I Hate Valentine’s Day, provides better gay imagery Convenient political correctness is what stunts Sacha Baron Cohen’s humor and keeps him from being a great comic artist. It’s why his 2007 film Borat ultimately was worthless. Because Borat catered to liberal/conservative partisanship, even GLAAD (the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination...

Adding to our long list of Rolls Royce Phantom wannabes from all over the world (bad taste has no ethnic boundaries...) is this creation that's said to come from Kazakhstan. A fitting (luxury) proposal for Sacha Baron Cohen's fictional character Borat, the Phantom appears to be based on the late 1980s - early 1990s, W124 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. By Matt Brunson BRUNO (2009). To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen's smackdown of Dan Quayle during the 1988 Vice Presidential Debate: "Bruno, I screened Borat; I knew Borat; Borat was a review of mine. Bruno, you're no Borat." At the same time, there's still plenty of laughs to be found in Borat, which finds creator Sacha Baron Cohen employing the same guerilla tactics and faux-documentary style that made Borat such an unlikely box...

The Kazakh National Youth Symphony is now touring America. This Friday, it will perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. I'm apparently one of the few Americans who didn't think Borat was an especially funny film. Anyway, I bet the KNYS will enjoy greater-than-normal success because the movie was such a hit.
