Boris Karloff news, related photos and videos, and reviews of Boris Karloff performances. According to Wikipedia: Boris Karloff was an English actor, who emigrated to Canada in the 1910s, best known for his roles in horror films and the creation of the Monster in 1931's "Frankenstein". His popularity following "Frankenstein" in the early 1930s was such that for a brief time he was billed simply as "Karloff" or, on some movie posters, "Karloff the Uncanny".

To commemorate the occasion Pierre Fournier has organized a Boris Karloff Blogathon over at his way cool Frankensteinia blog running all the way through November 26. Did you know that this Monday would have been Boris Karloff's 122nd birthday? As it happens, over a hundred bloggers knew this and decided to stage a blogathon. I opted to use this as an excuse to reinvigorate my YOU'RE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR LAST PICTURE blog. ("It's ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE!!!") Last updated in June with Peter Sellers, for some reason my next choice became problematic and perpetually backburnered. So finally, I decided to skip her...

Photo of Matt Kahler and Jessie Fisher by Paul Metreyeon First off, we should tell you that we’re more familiar with Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein” than Mary Shelley’s original novel. Or the Boris Karloff movie. Or any other version, really. (Our apologies to the Chicagoist Literary and Film Offices if they’re ashamed of us in any way.) The point is: We fully accept that The Hypocrites’ Frankenstein may have included references that went...

The Boris Karloff Blogathon has been running all week over at the superb Frankensteinia blog captained by Montréal cartoon artist and Frankenstein expert Pierre Fournier. I haven't participated in one of these internet-wide flurries of topic-focused writing in quite a while, but I've had great fun participating in them in the past, and even hosted one or two of them myself. I'm essentially too late to join the Karloff party, but the event has...

There's a Boris Karloff marathon on Turner Classic Movies today. You can read about the entire line-up on their site, but here are some highlights. At 5:30am, "The Ghoul," which reunites Karloff with his "The Old Dark House" and "Bride of Frankenstein" costar, Ernest Thesiger. Many of his movies had very similar plots, with Karloff playing some kind of mad scientist who is executed and comes back to life, or is condemned to death, as in "Before...

KARLOFF & LUGOSI HORROR CLASSICS (1936-1958). Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi made a series of memorable movies together during the 1930s and '40s (including The Raven and The Body Snatcher), but those aren't the titles showcased in this four-picture collection arriving in stores just in time for Halloween. Instead, these are minor efforts featuring one or the other of the actors (only one of the included...

"It is a scene etched in film history. ...the drowning of the little girl in Frankenstein was a truly transgressive moment in a film already overloaded with gruesome happenings. Actor Boris Karloff protested, as did audiences and critics when the film previewed. The scene was jettisoned, cutting off suddenly as The Monster reaches for the child."
John Cox went looking for the spot where this scene was shot, join him in The Return to Malibou...

And speaking as we were yesterday of Warner Home Video's fabulous forthcoming (October 6) box set of new-to-home video Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi flicks, I feel duty bound to say a little bit more about my fave of the bunch, the fabulously ahead of its time and post-modern Frankenstein 1970 (from 1958).
The plot:
Baron Victor Von Frankenstein (Karloff) has fallen on hard times; tortured by the Nazis during World War II, he is now (now...
