Many representatives of the Maun tourism industry were in Durban last week for the Tourism Indaba staged by South Africa.

Indaba is one of the largest tourism marketing events on the African calendar and one of the top three “must visit” events of its kind on the global calendar. It showcases the widest variety of Southern Africa's best tourism products, and attracts international visitors and media from across the world. Maun safari companies, travel agents, mobile safari operators and hoteliers could be seen rubbing shoulders with potential international clients. Among local companies were Helicopter Horizons, Afro Trek Safaris, Letaka Safaris, John Chase Safaris, Island Safaris and Royal Tree Lodge.

Due possibly to the size of the show and many of the larger exhibits, the Botswana area seemed to be surprisingly small. Recognising the importance of tourism to Botswana, and particularly to Maun, a first time visitor is left looking at an industry represented by a series of small tables that representatives share. One would have thought that the cubicles should be a minimum size for exhibitors to host potential clients and associates. Hopefully Botswana Tourism can put more support behind the exhibitors to help improve the overall stature and perception of our tourism industry.
