Entry from: Okavango Delta, Botswana Entry Title: “Botswana – Dessert (The Delta)” Entry: “March 1st – Okavango Delta The boys from Delta Rain picked us up this morning at 7am to take us to the makoro launching point A makoro is a traditional Botswanian canoe carved from a tree. We drove for about an hour in an open truck like cattle through tradional villages and viewed cemetaries that have canapies over the graves to help protect the spirits of the dead. At the waters edge we met our makoro poler who had an unpronouncable name but told us to call him ‘Batista’. We loaded the makoro and set off into the Delta. The water was calm and clear and filled with water lillies. Batista poled away all the time chatting about the Delta, his life and Botswana as we both laid back comfortably in the canoe. It was so comefy that I managed to fall asleep for a short time and due to the strengthening morning sun managed to burn my thighs. I now resembled an neopolitan ice cream, with brown lower legs, pink thighs and white upper legs. After about 45mins of poling we arrived at the campsite for the night. We spent the afternoon swimming in the Delta, letting Seung-Young palm read us and practising our own poling skills in the makoro’s.
