The
St. Louis Cardinals showed some stamina (
we love that stuff) during the 5th inning against the
San Diego Padres Monday, tying a major league record with 10 runs on 10 straight hits to snap their five-game skid.
Starting pitcher
Braden Looper (9-9, 5.25 ERA) led off the inning with a single to center and then with St. Louis up 8-3 bunted for another hit. Second baseman
Aaron Miles followed Looper with two base hits, driving in a run on the second try.
Scott Rolen's three-run shot busted the game wide open and chased Padres starter
David Wells off the hill. Then,
Ryan Ludwick immediately homered off reliever
Mike Thompson on his very first pitch.
"I don't know where that came from," Cards manager Tony La Russa shrugged. "It was really impressive."
Wells (5-8, 5.54 ERA) pitched four scoreless innings before unraveling in the fifth, striking out one and allowing seven earned runs on eleven hits overall.
Looper went 6.1 innings after giving up four runs and six hits with six strikeouts to bring his season record up to .500.
Two of those runs came on a Geoff Blum longball with 1 on and 1 out in the fifth. Khalil Greene and Adrian Gonzalez each hit round-trippers as well, and catcher Josh Bard added the last RBI for San Diego.
