The good news for the struggling 12-17 Arizona Diamondbacks ? Their manager Bob Melvin has been canned. The bad news for me? I lost a bet I made this Spring that the first manager to be fired this season would be Milwaukee Brewers skipper Ken Macha . Man, I was so sure, too. A source close to the team who wished to remain anonymous confirmed Melvin’s dismissal with the AP. This move by the D'Backs brass comes after a disappointing start by the club, who entered Thursday with a big league-worst .225 batting average, sitting 8 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in ... The times they are a changin'. Playing for peanuts and a brand new rivalry, the young studs in the NL West find themselves in the Championship Series opening tonight at 8:37pm ET -- and not a minute later -- at Chase Field. And if you're in the Arizona area, there is indeed room on the bandwagon . Jeff Francis , the Colorado Rockies ace with the sweet high-leg kick, will get the ball to face Arizona Diamondbacks strikeout machine, Brandon Webb . Webb went 0-3 with a 6.47 ERA in five starts against Colorado this season before his 4-2 win against them, clinching a ... Read Full Story

Brandon Webb continues to dominate the National League, picking up his major league-leading 17th victory Sunday after tossing six solid innings to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-1 win over the Atlanta Braves . As if that wasn't enough, he nailed a two-run double in the fourth to help bust the game wide open. With two out and Arizona leading 4-0, Braves starter Mike Hampton intentionally walked Chris Burke to get to Webb. Little did he know, Webb would line a double over the glove of Jeff Francouer in center to score two and put the D'backs up 6-0. Webb of course down-played ... Read Full Story

Brandon Webb is still shutting it down for the Arizona Diamondbacks , earning his big league-leading 13th victory Tuesday night over the Washington Nationals with a 2-0 shutout. The righty, who is 13-4 with a 3.27 ERA after being selected to his third straight NL All-Star team, allowed six hits over six innings, striking out six Nats and walking two. This marks the 16th of 19 games in which Webb has lasted at least six innings for the NL West-leading D'Backs. Meanwhile, opposing pitcher Odalis Perez was ejected after charging plate umpire Angel Hernandez, who called a second balk on the lefty in just ... Read Full Story

Brandon Webb pitched yet another gem Wednesday, kicking his season off at 4-0 for the first time in his career. The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Francisco Giants 4-1, with Webb not only throwing 62 pitches over the first six innings, and putting his team ahead in the second with a base hit. Through eight innings pitched, he allowed just one run on three hits, walking two and striking out five. His ERA on the season? 1.86. Yep, pretty awesome. On the other side of the baseball, Barry Zito (4.50 ERA) has lost his first four starts, a career worst. Over six innings, the ... Read Full Story
