The Absolute Legend People’s Car

Corporate Image

In 1933, Adolf Hitler's orders to Ferdinand Porsche was clear and detailed to come out with an absolute legend car-The Beetle. So they developed a "Volks-Wagen" of Folks Wagon that would be able to transport two adults and three children at 100 km/h. Even the price and payment scheme was dictated.

The oddly shaped compact car with headlight 'eyes', an air cooled rear engine with a built-in oil-cooler, and unusual sound is more or less airtight and will float on water.. It's distinguishing feature, the air-cooled 4-cylinder horizontally opposed cylinder has been used for many other purposes such as an experimental aircraft engine, air compressors for air-powered equipment, power water pumps for fire-fighting (up to the present day) and as engines used in "trikes", dune buggies and sandrails.

Originally named simply as Type 1, The Bug is an economy car produced from 1938 until 2003 making it the longest-running and most-produced automobile of a single design, totaling one million units as early as 1955. On February 17, 1972 the 15,007,034th Beetle was sold, and by 1973, total production was over 16 million.

In the 1960s and early 1970s, the demand for the Beetle began to decline but because of its growing reputation of reliability and innovative advertising. The people's car comes in 4th to Ford Model T, the Mini and the Citroen DS as the World's Most Influential Car of the 20th Century. With an unprecedented production run of 58 years, the last unit sold in the US was in 1978 although some were still selling in other countries. The very last original Beetle (No. 21,529,464) was produced in July 13, 2003, 65 years after its launch and was immediately shipped off to the company's museum in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Up to this day, Beetles still serve their purpose on the road. Owner's still cling to their reliable "bug", sometimes even baptizing it with its own name. On top of its special features that has contributed to its hardiness, its age has added to it a sentimental value symbolizing strength, endurance and "spirit" thus earning the right to be called an absolute legend.
