According to an authorized French source, 70 percent of the commercial bank financing is in place for Brazil's Scorpene submarine procurement. The past week in Latin America has been pretty busy due to the repercussions of President Lula’s comments during a visit by the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy. Besides being the guest of honour and besides the fact that it is the year of France in Brazil, Sarkozy came with two missions: the first one was simple and the second was relatively difficult. The simple mission was to carry out something that was already or partially agreed upon: the purchase of submarines and helicopters. The... Read Full Story
This is a photo of the Igreja do Carmo (Santo Antônio do Carmo) in Olinda , Brazil, and it is the oldest church of the Monastery of "Carmelitas" in Brazil - built in 1580. As for the fabulous and almost desert beach here are the photos. The first one, taken when arriving at our destination, the Mangue Seco beach, gives you a fair idea of what the area looks like - almost inhabited - it's pure nature... The second one, with the buggy at half speed heading for the "parking area" and with the lens a bit more clean (or should I say less sandy) shows almost all there is to show about the local "beach facilities"... Although rustic, the little structure (above to the... Read Full Story
The Brazilian government should spend US$ 160 million by the end of next year on the development of a nuclear-powered submersible to protect the oil reserves found recently off its coast, said Brazil's Defense minister Nelson Jobim on Friday. The vessel, which officials hope to be complete by 2020, would be the first nuclear-powered submarine in Latin America and is being developed with Brazilian technology and lately French assistance. Brazil does not have nuclear weapons. The submarine is... Read Full Story
As I've told you in my last post, when in Mangue Seco do rent a buggy and go for a ride with one of the local tour guides, they're very friendly and excellent drivers. Believe me, you're gonna have a wonderful time. You start by leaving the village in some sort of a convoy formation heading to the dunes in the center of the peninsula. Then the caravan stops and then them round everybody... On the top of the dune the time is to get a grip, control the nervous and get courageous... Down hill... Read Full Story
Placed in the north end of the Bahia State (in the frontier with the Sergipe State) are the beaches of Mangue Seco - a fabulous mixture of gold sands and luxurious vegetation. The best way to get to the peninsula is crossing the Rio Real river. To do so, just drive to the Pontal village and there take the boat directly to Mangue Seco (about 30 or 40 minutes sailing). In Mangue Seco I would advise you to rent one of the buggys and go for a tour. Above a view from the top of the dunes to the... Read Full Story

A month or so ago, I began receiving various links to different videos of absolutely amazing guitarists. There are so many talented players out there that I had never known before. Around that time, I received a gift from a dear friend of mine in Brazil - my first Baden Powell CD.
I am almost embarrassed to say that I may have heard the name Baden Powell before, but had not known his playing prior to this gift. I very quickly eased into the sounds of this Brazilian guitar master as many of... Read Full Story
