Brett Ratner Gay Slur Causes Controversy

Brett Ratner success is baffling. (Getty Images) For someone with a reputation as overprivileged, hack director more concerned with style and celebrity over substance, Brett Ratner isn't doing himself any favors by dropping gay slurs. During a Q&A following a screening of his latest big budget film Tower Heist, Ratner dismisses the notion of practice by saying, "rehearsal is for fags," a four word phrase that not only demonstrates ignorance but also his disregard for the craft of filmmaking.

The uproar from his comments forced Ratner to release the following statement: “I apologize for any offense my remarks caused. It was a dumb way of expressing myself. Everyone who knows me knows that I don’t have a prejudiced bone in my body. But as a storyteller I should have been much more thoughtful about the power of language and my choice of words.”

Ugh, first he shows his ignorance with his choice of words, then he calls himself a "storyteller"… too much discomfort for one day. But that wasn't enough foot-in-mouth for Ratner. Later in the week, he went on the Howard Stern show and made a bigger fool of himself, saying he lied about sleeping with actress Olivia Munn and to say that he made Lindsay Lohan take an STD test before they slept together at a time when "she was very young."

The Ratner controversy has not only done a number on his Tower Heist promo tour, but it's also caused a stir with the Academy since they recently hired Ratner to produce the upcoming Oscars. The Academy issued a statement saying Ratner is still part of the production.
