Idea: Francoeur for Brian Bannister & Jose Guillen

It was reported a couple of days ago that Jeff Francoeur would like to be traded to a team where he could play every day. Some rumors had him on the way out as early as this weekend.

One NYBD reader – 86Mets- proposed a Jeff Francoeur for Brian Bannister deal. I actually like it, but would think that Jose Guillen would have to come back for Kansas City to make such a trade.

It’s a well know fact that KC wants to dump Guillen’s remaining salary (about $3.5 million this year). Remember, Francoeur is arbitration eligible and made $5 million this year so that comes into play, especially since Bannister is controllable next year.

Obviously Francoeur for Guillen/Bannister isn’t a sexy deal, but it would help them for the rest of 2010. Bannister could take Hisanori Takahashi‘s spot in the rotation. Although he is having a lousy year in the American League, I could see him having success in an NL return. Playing in Citi Field and for a solid defensive team does wonders for sinkerballers. You’re asking him to be your fifth starter (yes R.A Dickey is now #4) and upgrading your bullpen by putting Takahashi there. More importantly, you get Guillen to be your fourth outfielder for the rest of the year. Personally, you are going to need someone like him because I believe Beltran is going to sit two days a week the rest of the year. On the other side KC gets a young player with some upside in Francoeur (if you still believe that) who will be rather inexpensive in 2011.

Not a sexy trade, but one that could be harmless enough to help the Mets for this year. You also get starting pitching depth in Bannister for next season.
