Chicago Bears fans are making their voices heard: They want Rex Grossman benched in favor of Brian Griese.
Grossman is having a Grossman-like game tonight against the Dallas Cowboys, which is to say he’s looking rather incompetent. After a fourth quarter interception was returned for a touchdown that probably put the game out of reach, the cheers grew louder and louder: “Griese! Griese! Griese!”
And the fans are right. It’s time for Bears coach Lovie Smith to yank Grossman and see what Griese can do. Is Griese going to lead the Bears to a championship? Probably not. But he has a better chance than Grossman does.
If Grossman stays in, it’ll be a real shame, because the Bears have the talent on defense and special teams to be a great team. They don’t need a great quarterback or even a good one to win a Super Bowl, they just need a quarterback who won’t throw the game away. Rex Grossman is not that quarterback. Lovie Smith is keeping Bears fans from finding out if Brian Griese is.
