Placebo is back with a happy album. Battle for the Sun is happy until the point of ridiculousness. How else can we judge Brian Molko singing “Cenicero, cenicero, mi corazón de cenicero” in “Ashtray Heart”? Or what about is Brian’s declaration saying that he will battle for the sun? Is that a self-help declaration or a happy suicide note?
There are some good moments in this album, like The Never-Ending Why, which makes Placebo’s fans in their late 20s or early 30s remember their teen years (not that I feel identified, of course…).
To be completely fair, Battle for the Sun is enjoyable walking in the snow at -2° C in the evening. For some reason, this album injects you some kind of optimism and helps you get back home. For What It’s Worth…
