The Jays Brian Tallet and Jason Frasor Prove They Don’t Belong.

Both Brian Tallet and Jason Frasor have had some good games over the years, yet with prolonged slumps and abysmal pitching this year, it’s starting to look like they don’t belong at the major league level.

With the Blue Jays falling to 8 games back of third place Boston and 11.5 games behind the AL East leading Yankees it’s easy to say the Jays, as a unit, have faltered. However, when you look at who on the Jays has faltered most often and which poor performances have directly led to a loss – look no further than Tallet and Frasor.

Jason Frasor started this season as the Jays closer and in his very first outing; he was tagged for 4 hits, 2 earned runs and was charged with a blown save and the loss. Since game one, Jason has blown 2 other saves opportunities that were followed by a path of destruction in the form of 22R/18ER in 32.1 innings pitched. Frasor bookends his game one loss with a loss charged to him last night in a 0.1IP/1earned debacle.

Overall, Jason Frasor’s 5.01era is only the second worst pitching performance on the Jays staff – trailing only – you guessed it, Brian Tallet.

Brian Tallet was a starter to begin the year, and he showed promise with a 6.1IP/2ER/4R night. However, since his first appearance this year, Tallet’s ability to pitch at the major league level has gone south.

With a penchant to give up the long ball (10HR’s in 13 appearances), Tallet has been smacked around to the tune of 29R/27ER in 41 innings pitched and a 5.88era. To make matters worse, Tallet has struck out only 31, while walking 23 batters.

The inability to keep the k-rate up and the walk rate down, in addition to giving up nearly 1 HR per outing is a real problem at any level in baseball.

Unfortunately for Tallet and the Jays, last night was no different. Tallet was charged with the blown save, against Minnesota, after giving up 3 walks and a homerun in just 1.2IP and I have to wonder when the Jays management will take notice that these same problems occur over and over again.

So what should Toronto do when they finally realize that Brian Tallet and Jason Frasor continue making the same mistakes and have directly cost the Jays 8 wins? What should Toronto do with two pitchers who set the low standard on the Blue Jays pitching staff?

There are 3 simple choices:

(1) Demote them, and let them work through their inefficiencies in the minors.

(2) Trade them; if any team is willing to take these guys, you have to go for it.

(3) Cut ties with them outright, and bring up a young pitcher who has earned his chance.

Brian Tallet and Jason Frasor have proven that they don’t belong at the major league level, and by selecting any of the three above options, the Jays management will indicate to Toronto and their fans that this rebuilding process is being taken seriously.

Until the Jays take this rebuilding proccess seriously and adjust their roster accordingly - they, as a team with any play-off aspirations this century, don’t belong.
