Designer Tips For Choosing The Perfect Bridal Jewelry
Here Comes The Bride...
and doesn't she look fabulous!
by Colette Bouchez
You've got the wedding dress - you've got the shoes - you even know how you're going to wear your hair! But if you haven't picked out your bridal jewelry, your outfit just isn't complete!
And while shopping for bridal jewelry is almost the same as for any other major event, the big difference is these are jewels that will be part of your wedding memory forever - not to mention those wedding pictures!
Plus - you also want to make sure that your bridal jewelry is ultra comfortable - the last thing you want to do is spend your wedding day tugging at earrings and fussing with a bracelet! If your earrings on clip -on style, wear them for several hours before the big day to make sure they don't pinch! If your earrings are pierced, make certain they sit properly in your ear - and don't tug or pull as the day wears on.
Also important: If you have any jewelry allergy, purchase only bridal jewelry items that are platinum, gold, silver or plated in gold or silver. Any base metal could cause a rash and leave you itching throughout your wedding day!
To help you zero in on the style that works best, let your wedding gown be your guide! Here are a few tips on how to use your style to select the bridal jewely that completes the look!
The Romantic Bride
You've got that full Cinderella skirt - and a veil that goes on forever! You're the true romantic - and your jewelry should reflect your personal style. But the last thing you want to do is compete with your gown and headress - so go simple on the jewels.
Bridal Earrings: Look for small drops in a heart or teardrop shape - with a small dangle just below your ear. If you headress is very elaborate, consider a simple stud earring in a heart, round or square shape.
Bridal Bracelets: If you have long sleeves, choose a simple, single strand bracelet - either a simulated diamond (or diamond, you lucky girl!) or a strand of pearls or crystals.
Bridal Necklace: If your neckline is high, try a thread-thin chain with a tiny symbol of your faith - a cross, a Star of David, or a dove. Or a single strand of tiny seed pearls - as long as it doesn't compete with your dress!
The Glamorous Bride
You know who you are - it's Red Carpet Style all the way! Your gown can be tailored or tulle, straight or full - but the one thing for sure is it's glamour all the way!
Bridal Earrings: True glamour brides know the art of selecting just the right
jewels - so be ultra considerate of your wedding gown style. If it's on the tailored side, you can choose a more elaborate earring - like a dazzling crystal chandelier or a dramatic long linear drop. If your wedding gown is bedecked and bejeweled with beads, sequins and lace, opt for a simplier earring - a single large stone drop for example, or a large single clip earring in pearl or diamond simulant.
Bridal Bracelets: Most truly glamorous gowns are strapless or off the shoulder- and if yours is too then feel free to choose some truly elaborate bridal bracelets. You can layer three or four single strand crystals or CZ line bracelets, or focus on one glorious wide cuff bracelet in pearls or crystals. You can also choose an estate style bracelet, pave or link style for an ultra glamorus red carpet bride look!
Bridal Necklaces : If your gown is strapless or off-the-shoulder, a necklace is a must - but choose your style based on your face shape and neck length. If you are blessed with that super-model swan like long neck and low decolette, then opt for a more substantial necklace - a large CZ or crystal drop neck on a fancy chain can fill in a neckline and bring light and attention to your face. If your neck is shorter, and your chest area smaller, then look for a more petite drop . Ideally it should sparkle in the center of your chest, so choose a chain length that gives you the appropriate "drop" length.
The Sophisticated Bride
You love clean simple lines and sleek fabrics - satins and charmeuse and crepe. If you bridal gown is simple, then your bridal jewelry should be too - but that doesn't mean you can't sparkle and shine!
Bridal Earrings: Look for geometric shapes like princess cut, baguette, or
emerald, or the classic and elegant round shape - which look fabulous as a simple stud earring. If you'd like to choose a long or dangle earring, try the sleek look of a short drop in sparkling crystal or CZ. The classic "estate look" jewelry is made for the sophisticated bride - seek out elegant reproductions of jewelry from the 1930's and 40's - with the sleek clean lines of art-deco. What you probably want to avoid is the typical "chandelier" earring - it won't look right with a tailored or sleek cut gown.
Bridal Bracelets: Whether long sleeve or short the estate look is your best choice! Go for the linear lines of a square pave set bracelet, or any rectagular shaped jewels. Avoid charm bracelets ( they also tend to hook onto bouquets and could be clumsy ) and instead opt for the single liner look of a wider bracelet - about an inch. You can also go big and bold with a simple cuff style - in pearls or crystals, with a pave watch on your other arm (to get you to the church on time!)
Bridal Necklaces: Just because you're cool and understated, it doesn't mean you don't want to sparkle on your wedding day! Choose the opulance of a single large stone in a classic shape - princess or square cut, emerald or round stone shape. The key is the simple elegance of single stones - and not the fussy look of multi-stoned necklace. You can also try a simple strand of pearls or crystals with a CZ or other stone enhancer - or wear the pearls alone, with a small drop charm in your faith - a cross, Star of David or a simple dove of peace.
