The New York Times ran a story describing the ugly politics in South Carolina that doomed John McCain’s 2000 run. It mentions his adopted daughter, Bridget McCain.
Some speculated that Bridget McCain was adopted in part due to a family scandal -- but the McCains have denied these claims. John McCain's wife first met Bridget while visiting an orphanage and the family adopted her soon after.

Cindy McCain Exposed by Christian Science Monitor for Lying About Mother Theresa’s Role in Bridget McCain’s Adoption
by Deputy Diva
How did I miss this gem? This is Cindy McCain with adopted daughter, Bridget McCain who originally hails from Bangladesh. Bridget was taken from a Bangladeshi orphanage by Cindy McCain and brought to America. Now there is nothing wrong with adopting a child from another country, particularly a child who is an orphan no less; but to reportedly lie about the details of the adoption and lead people to believe you actually took the child from “the arms of Mother Theresa,” in order to score brownie points for your husband’s campaign, reeks of deception and dishonesty. Furthermore, it speaks not only to your character, but how you will readily exploit your own adopted daughter for political gain.
According to the Christian Science Monitor:
Mrs. McCain, it turns out, never met Mother Teresa. (Once contacted by the Monitor, the campaign revised the story on its website.) SOURCE
What is even more interesting is that back in 2000, Bridget McCain, 17, was placed at the centre of a political scandal in 2000, when her father ran against George W Bush for the Republican presidential nomination.
After Mr. McCain, who had taken his adopted daughter on the campaign trail, won the New Hampshire primary, a phone poll apparently organised by Bush allies asked voters in South Carolina: “Would you be more or less likely to vote for John McCain if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?”
Mr. McCain lost the South Carolina primary and his campaign never recovered. SOURCE
All is apparently forgiven now between the Bushs’ & McCains’. I don’t know too many people who could now embrace someone who slung that type of ‘hot grease’ about one of their children… in public no less.
