Thousands of British Airways cabin crew are to vote on whether to take industrial action, the Unite trade union said Saturday, in a row over job cuts and new contracts. The ballot will open on November 16 and close on December 14. Unite would have to give seven days' notice before the start of any action, so strikes could begin just before the Christmas holiday season. The Unite union said Monday it will announce the results of a planned ballot of British Airways PLC cabin crew for strike action in mid-December, raising the prospect of a walkout over the busy Christmas period. The decision to begin voting next week followed a mass meeting of more than 3,000 cabin crew at a racecourse near London to discuss a response to BA's cost-cutting plans. October was supposed to be it. By Halloween, the feds were supposed to have made their ruling on the long-delayed application by British Airways (LSE: BAY.L) and American (NYSE: AMR) for antitrust immunity, but we still haven't heard a thing. The airlines are frustrated, the pilots are thrilled, and this whole thing is just a mess. I, for the life of me, can't figure out how they keep holding this up.
