Britta Steffen, a German swimmer who specializes in freestyle, who is a former holder of the world record in women’s 100-meter freestyle, has defeated 41-year-old Dara Torres, an American swimmer, who has competed in five Olympics: 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, and 2008. In her career, Torres has won twelve Olympic medals (four-gold, four-silver, and four-bronze), five of which she won in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. BERLIN (AFP) -- Double Olympic champion Britta Steffen on Thursday set a new world record for the women's 100 metres freestyle in a time of 52.85sec at the German national championships. The previous record of 52.88 was held by Australian Libby Trickett. Steffen won 100m Olympic gold in Beijing last year, beating Tricket at the death.
