Steffen clocked in an Olympic record of 24.06 seconds to beat the previous mark of 24.13 set up by Inge de Bruijn of the Netherlands on September 22, 2000. Britta Steffen, a German swimmer who specializes in freestyle, who is a former holder of the world record in women’s 100-meter freestyle, has defeated 41-year-old Dara Torres, an American swimmer, who has competed in five Olympics: 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, and 2008. In her career, Torres has won twelve Olympic medals (four-gold, four-silver, and four-bronze), five of which she won in the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
