In 1999 Steffen won six titles at the European junior championships, and won a medal as a member of Germany’s freestyle relay team at the Summer Olympics 2000. In 2004, she asked to swim the 4×100 m relay. But after the Olympics, she took one year off swimming and concentrated on her studies, which were not finished. Steffen sets new WR for women's 100m free

BERLIN (AFP) -- Double Olympic champion Britta Steffen on Thursday set a new world record for the women's 100 metres freestyle in a time of 52.85sec at the German national championships. The previous record of 52.88 was held by Australian Libby Trickett. Steffen won 100m Olympic gold in Beijing last year, beating Tricket at the death.
