Eight people, plus three children, were shot at a crowded garden party in the Bronx early on Sunday, and the police said they were looking for a 17-year-old in connection with the shooting.

Seven of the victims, amid them an 11-year-old boy and two girls, ages 13 and 14, were in steady condition at hospitals in the Bronx and Westchester County on Sunday evening, the establishment said. An eighth victim, a 24-year-old man who was shot twice in the upper body, was in dangerous condition, the police said.

The firing began shortly after 3:30 a.m. behind 651 East 221st Street in Williams Bridge, witnesses said.

Some partygoer’s runaway by hurling themselves over the chain link barrier enclosing the backyard of the two-story house, which is just east of the Bronx River throughway.

Mark Watson, who lives in the underground room apartment of the house, which he said was owned by his father, was awakened by the gunfire.

About six people, none of whom were injured, rushed into the basement, switched off the lights and hid.

“It’s a real disaster,” Mr. Watson said.

The police said witnesses told investigators that the gunman was Oneil Dasilva, 17, whose last known address was in Mount Vernon, in Westchester. Mr. Dasilva has an wide record that includes an arrest this year on a charge of attempted kill in the Bronx, the police said. The status of that case was not right away known.

A relation of one of the victims said Mr. Dasilva had been on excellent terms with many of the guests at the party.

The police said Mr. Dasilva appeared to have been concerned in a quarrel before the shooting.

On Sunday afternoon, sneakers, women’s shoes and a black bonnet littered the muck yard, items left behind by people fleeing the shooting.

A 23-year-old woman who was raking the garbage in the yard on Sunday afternoon said her 11-year-old brother was among the wounded.

The boy had been snoozing inside, she said, but in the minutes before the aggression began, he had gone outside because he was starving.
