Bryan Ferry! The legendary lead singer of Roxy Music played a sold out show at New York’s Beacon Theatre on October 6, 2011. This was my first time seeing Bryan Ferry live and it was absolutely worth waiting for. He looked great and sounded great. His 2 hour set saw a generous sampling of hits throughout his career, both with and without Roxy Music and material from his latest album “Olympia” was prominently featured. Several covers were played as well including three songs from Bob Dylan (don’t forget Bryan Ferry had a Bob Dylan covers album called ”Dylan-esque”).
Bryan Ferry had a full band, great backup singers and dancers for a few of the songs! Throughout the show, trippy projections were shown on the screen behind the band and Bryan Ferry played keyboards and harmonica on several of the songs. There were many standing ovations throughout the show and deservedly so – as part of Roxy Music, he influenced the New Wave sound which shaped the music of the 1980s so greatly. He played Roxy Music songs such as “Love Is the Drug,” “Avalon” and “The Main Thing” and from his solo career, he played “Kiss And Tell,” “Slave To Love” as well as his cover of John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy.”
You missed out if you weren’t able to attend this show as Bryan Ferry was great and he doesn’t tour the US that often. Hopefully he’ll be back soon. I was fortunate enough to meet Bryan Ferry and he posed for a picture with me. Unfortunately, I caught him in mid blink, but regardless I am so grateful for our meeting. Thanks for a great day Bryan – one I won’t be forgetting any time soon. See that photo as well as the set list after the jump.
