The process of mould making and casting almost always starts with a model. Learning the basic skills required to make a model will allow you to create new and interesting products that nobody else has even thought about. The type of material you use to make your model could be anything from plaster to wood or metal and most popular among sculptors, clay.

Clay is an ideal material to make models being easily shaped and formed by simple tools and even your hands.Water Based Clay This clay material is very low in cost. The clay needs to be kept workable by keeping it moist. Unfortunately when the clay dries it tends to shrink and crack and is not very durable if knocked. This material may be suitable for making quick and simple castings.
An alternative to water based clay, this material cannot be reused once set hard as water based clay can.Oven Baked Clay This material remains workable for as long as you need it and only hardens when put in a kiln or oven. This material cannot be reused as once it is fired it remains hard.Oil Based Clay Unlike all the other clays, oil based clay cannot be hardened by any process and always remains in a workable state.

One of the greatest benefits is that this material never shrinks or cracks and can be reused over and over.Plastelina as it is sometimes referred to comes in several varieties of hardness. One of the most popular tools to shape the clay are of the wooden variety with varying tips to create infinite shapes and finishes. These can be purchased individually or in sets.
Of the metal variety there are additional types that have cutting edges which are much better than the tools with cheap wire hoops to dig out holes. Thinner slices can be more accurately carved out of the clay with these better quality cutting tools. As clay models are malleable and flexible when working it is necessary to support models with larger proportions or features such as arms or legs of a figurine.

You can use almost anything to support your model from paddle pop sticks to toothpicks but the most reliable and popular material to use is extruded aluminium rod. This is known as armature wire and can form the rough basic frame of the final model in which the clay can be added to and built up.
A very useful tool which was developed in the US is called a clay gun or clay extruder. This is a small tool with a barrel in which you load with soft clay. You then add an attachment to the end of the barrel which can come in a multitude of shapes and allows the clay to be pushed through it to for a long clay extrusion. The tool is similar in design to a syringe.

These extrusions can then be cut into slices and pressed onto models.Textured surfaces in clay models can be carved by hand but this process can take a long time and takes a lot of practice to get the desired effect. The use of special silicone or plastic texture pads can make the process a lot quicker and more realistic.
These pads have usually been manufactured by taking impressions of real life surfaces such as rock and contain a lot of detail which can be transferred to the clay model by simply pressing the pad onto the soft clay surface.Rolling pins are ideal for preparing even thickness slabs. The thickness of the slabs can be easily controlled by the use of wooden strips.

If you wish to create a 2cm thick slab then find two 2cm wooden strips and lay them parallel to each other so that the rolling pin can run along the top. Then place the clay down the middle of these two strips and keep rolling the pin over until the clay is pressed to the height of the strips.Textured pins are also available to give a textured surface to the clay slabs.
You dont necessarily need to be a talented sculptor to create a beautiful model in clay. It is a lot easier than most people think.Clay is a very easy material to work with and if you make a mistake it can be easily covered over and redone. One very useful technique to adopt is to work on a small part of your model and get it perfect. You can then turn this small part of the model into a plastic casting and use these castings as templates for future models and variations.

This will save you making this part over and over and if you make a big mistake with your sculpture you will always have this part of the model saved. When working with armature wire, make sure you attach it securely to a base before adding the clay.If the model you are wanting to create is large and bulky you can reduce the amount of clay you need by packing polystyrene foam around the wire frame before adding the clay.
You can then start applying the clay to the model using tools to get the detail you require. The use of the clay extruder or texture pads can be used to give your model interesting shape and surface. If you wish to create new texture surfaces you can easily make them yourself by carving or pressing surface into some clay. You can then pour silicone over the textured clay to make a permanent texture pad.

Another easy way is to use the new silicone putty which once mixed has the consistency of clay and can be pressed directly onto a textured surface. This will dry in around 10 minutes and will form a strong but flexible texture pad. Glass Verandas are a relatively new product to hit the UK market. They have been around for years in one form or another but only now are people seeing them as a home improvement product rather than just a glass cover for a walkway or porch area.
Glass Verandas are basically a glass roof that extends from your house offering a sheltered area. They are generally supported by two or more posts depending on the desired width and projection. The more expensive Verandas use aluminium frame work which provides the maximum strength whilst preventing against rust and other forms of corrosion.

Aluminum also offers a really nice finish to power coating that will be applied to match your property. The main requirement for owning a Glass Veranda is for shelter over an outdoor area allowing you protection for light showers. The is great for us here in Britain as even mid summer we are subject to light showers – this can really ruin a barbeque or garden party.
Glass Verandas can almost be considered an additional room to your property. With a couple of additions such as external lights and infra red heaters you can sit under shelter for most of the summer nights without feeling cold. With the addition of a Sun Awning installed above your glass veranda you can add a shaded area to sit under if the heat gets too much.

The only real negative of the Glass Veranda can be the cost – aluminium is not a cheap material and often the Verandas have complicated extrusions to ensure longevity. For safety, laminated safety glass is required which is an additional expense.Often the cost here comes close to that of a conservatory which may put some people off.
There are many negatives to a conservatory which are too much for this article but all are overcome by the Glass Veranda. Hardware and building supplies are required to make a complete building. Building supplies includes cement, insulation, bricks, etc. Construction companies have all the building supplies they will need and you dont have to provide them with anything.

But when you are planning a home project you need such supplies for, there are many hardware and supplies stores that can help you out. Lets discuss some various hardware pieces you will need for a typical building projectFurniture Some hardware you will need for your furniture are the ones that are used for support and to enhance the look, design and durability of the piece.
You might require furniture legs, furniture arms, frames, screws, etc.Bathroom Hardware A bathroom requires many fixtures and fittings, which also need other hardware to support them and improve the whole look of the area. Bathroom hardware includes taps, tubs, shelves, mirrors, showers, holders, etc.

Plumbing hardware Plumbing material is very important, as there is a constant demand for water and also even if the usage is over, the water remains in these products. Thus it is imperative that the hardware used for plumbing is corrosion resistant and highly durable. Also, you need to make sure that the hardware can withstand extreme temperatures.
Materials commonly used are aluminium, copper and steel.Doors One of the first things someone notices about your house is the door. So, why not make sure that while they are standing on your doorstep they have something attractive to look at Door hardware, like knockers, number plates, door handles, hinges, screws, fasteners and hooks, helps create that attractive effect.
