Making Progress

Slowly but surely, I'm beginning to remove the many obstacles that have interferred with my being productive over the past several months. It's interesting to analyze those situations in hindsight and make a determination of whether most of them originated from the same place and if so, what to do about maintaining a relationship there. Also interesting is analyzing the diversity of the interferences, their pattern and goal. The now pending question is whether these situations could have been foreseen and averted. I suspect the bringer of the hive looked quite innocent and loving.

The biggest relief is that productivity has resumed and inertia is no longer the major factor in each day. Even though there are barriers, it's good to know that there's a way around each one. In fact, sometimes there are quite a few ways around those barriers. It's simply a matter of knowing which to use.

All of these interruptions have been more than a headache. They have, in many instances, been the source of nighmares relating to one seeming insurmountable avalanche of obstacles after another. It is so uncomfortable to be held at the back of the pack because the very basics of doing your work are like flint and stone to start a fire. A young man who was applying to USC's School of Film described the discouragement of attempting to learn in places that did not have resources and trying to make do with pitiful semblances of work and learning materials. He said it took so much effort that eventually you forgot what the purpose of the effort was. These days and months of being held back with the numerous interferences and obstacles have been quite similar, almost the same.

During all of the ordeal, however, has been the constant observation of things going on about me and analysis of them. It is important to do our own critical thinking and based on facts, come to our own conclusions. We can compare our conclusions with those that are preached to us by the government, the news media, and so on. If the two match, then we find validity and confirmation of our decisions to act in one way or another. If they do not, they we re-examine our study to determine what the differences are between our work analysis and that of the other. The deviations are relevant.

I rejoice at finally being published in the UK and Europe ("A Yank Considers U.S. 'Year Of The Rat' Recruiting," Onrec.com, March 13, 2008). My forecast discusses why there is not a looming recession as well as the basis for coming to that conclusion. That conclusion and determination is backed up by the Economic Policy Institute researchers. Many of my forecast areas of comment are having similar validation. So to break through the publishing barrier in order to put my words (and face) back in the sunlight is very gratifying.

My forecast also looks at the state of women in business and leadership. Several of my recent writings have talked about those areas as well. So it was also quite gratifying when the conversation I had with one of the Starbucks regulars evolved into the areas about those subjects. I was pleased with myself that I'd taken the time to read the information and become as informed as possible. I was able to speak with authority and conviction; I was able to form sustainable conclusions. My friend provided the grist for future proposals and workshops. Ah! More for the To Do list.

Finally, with some of the confusion and deterence removed, I was able to see the two perspectives that drove my Starbucks friend to want to talk incessantly while I was focused on getting through and then back to the online content. My friend has just returned from Spring break. I'm still trying to break through.

But Life is essentially good. It isn't yet necessary to stand flat footed and ready for an all out assault, for heavy battle. There's a little parrying here and there and then the fatal jab that brings home my victory.

Be firm, be confident, be thorough. Project those attitudes. Respect will follow, especially if all are accompanied by appropriate humility.
