San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Justin Smith has been added to the NFL Pro Bowl roster in place of injured Kevin Williams of Minnesota. The Niners made the announcement Tuesday that Smith would play in his first Pro Bowl. Smith is the fifth 49ers player on the roster, joining running back Frank Gore, tight end Vernon Davis, linebacker Patrick Willis and punter Andy Lee.

Former San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl punter Tom Wittum, who was drafted by the Chicago White Sox but opted for a standout baseball and football career at Northern Illinois, has died. He was 60. Wittum died of cancer Friday at his home in the northern Chicago suburb of Antioch, his son, Matt Wittum, said Tuesday.
