SEO Part 2
As I continue with the topic of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) I want to tell you about two elements of importance.
On page and off page factors.
Off page factors are things like:
Getting important or high ranking Websites to link to you. This is one of the most important factors in getting your Website ranked. It is also very time consuming and can be a expensive and deadly if done wrong because you can get your site banned forever.
You can rent links from reputable companies, but keep in mind this is not cheap. There are people out there that will try to sell you a service that will supposedly get you thousands of incoming links for $29.95.
Don’t fall for that! It will get you banned!
SEO is very valuable therefore it’s like anything else that has value it’s not easy or cheap.
When you want to get at the top of Google and the other search engines keep two things in mind:
First, the search engine’s objective; they want the results of a search to be relevant to what one is searching for. Here’s what I mean by that, if you search for motorcycle jackets you want to get Websites that sell motorcycle jackets and nothing else.
If the search engines weren’t adamant about that they wouldn’t have returning visitors would they?
Second, The people that set the rules as to what it takes to get a top search engine position are a team of extremely smart and high paid Phd’s! So don’t think it’s easy to figure out a formula!
Some other off page factors are things that you do to drive traffic to your site like using Web 2.0 strategies like posting to forums, having a My Space or Face Book, or a Squidoo lens, or using You Tube, or having a blog. These are just a few of the things that you do off of your site to drive traffic to your site!
Now let’s talk about on page factors a little.
Is your domain name relevant to your business?
There are a lot of different opinions as to whether or not this is important, but many of the gurus think it is! Here is an example of what I mean; because the main keyword that I go after is Baton Rouge Real Estate one of my sites is www.BatonRougeRealEstateInformation.com
Next is LSI- Latent Semantic Indexing- This is a very important factor and what it means is using your top keywords and keyword phrases in your text, and in the picture descriptions.
Here is an example:
If you want to optimize for Baton Rouge Real Estate and Baton Rouge Homes, you would want to have those phrases in the text you write throughout your Website. And no, you can’t just have pages full of those words, the text has to make sense.
People in the earlier days tried that and now the term is called “keyword stuffing” and it will get you banned from Google. Remember what I said earlier about the phd’s.
Here is one more thing that is very important; having a big site with a lot of pages. The reason for this is it shows Google that the site has not just been created. The theory is if you have a site that is several years old it will have hundreds if not thousands of pages because of the new content that is added over time with new articles, services items etc.
One of the top Baton Rouge Real Estate sites has about 5000 pages, that’s right Five Thousand!
Hope this makes sense and gives you an idea about what is involved in SEO. I have a huge module full of information in my exclusive “Back Office” on this topic for our agents.
In my next post I will talk more about Online marketing.
Til then go get-em,
