Continental Airlines Inc. said Wednesday it signed two new partnerships with airlines, a day after it joined the world's largest carrier alliance. Continental, based in Houston, signed deals with Japan's largest domestic airline ANA (All Nippon Airways) and Asiana Airlines, based in Seoul, South Korea. The airlines will cooperate with Continental through code sharing, frequent flyer programs, and passenger lounge access. Code sharing allows passengers to book legs of a flight on different airlines with one ticket. Chairman and CEO Larry Kellner will leave Continental Airlines Inc. at year-end to return to the private-equity business and will be replaced by company president Jeff Smisek. Continental, the nation's fourth-largest airline, announced the change late Thursday. Kellner, 50, has spent 14 years at Continental, including the last five as CEO. The chief executive of Continental Airlines Inc. got compensation the company valued at nearly $5 million in 2008, down 17.1 percent from the year before, according to analysis of a regulatory filing Friday. Chairman and CEO Lawrence W. Kellner's salary was cut by 58 percent. But more than half of his 2008 compensation was in the value of stock and option grants, and the company doubled his target share award from the year before. Continental Airlines Inc. is looking into a weekend accident in which a flight bound for George Bush International Airport from Denver International Airport went off the runway. The Houston airline’s flight 1404, a Boeing 737-500 aircraft carrying 110 passengers and five crew members, was unable to take off, ran off the runway and caught fire, according to news agencies.
