Having a decent hardware set is no more enough for any electronic gadget to dominate its respective market segment. That’s the reason why almost every major electronic manufacturer is concentrating on developing their application, and the printer segment is no exception. The latest manufacturer working on their Application center is the Lexmark International Inc. (LXK). According to the news from the tech experts Lexmark International Inc. (LXK) intends to call third-party developers for developing applications for their most recent small and medium-sized business printers, it’s a move which the company hope will augment the competition with industry leader Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ)
The Lexmark International Inc. (LXK) will be releasing the dedicated software and tools, which will let the developers to develop small applications. Lexmark is calling the program “SmartSolutions”. According to a Lexmark executive, the applications will be written in Adobe Systems Inc’s (ADBE) Flash technology. The applications could be used for easily printing documents such as boarding passes or for scanning documents and for sending the documents to the web server straight from a corporate printer.

According to the Lexington, Ky.-based corporation, they intends to enhance the capabilities of their printer in the same way just as some other companies have extended the functionality of cars and cell phones by providing different applications to them.
According to one of the Lexmark Executive, “By developing the applications for the printer the company actually is expanding their printer world beyond the PCs, which earlier was the limit for the printers. These new applications will let the printers go directly to Web without the help of a computer.”
The application store of Lexmark International Inc. (LXK) comes as many of the other companies tries to adopt a model, sharpened by Apple Inc. (AAPL) with its iPad and iPhone devices. Initiated in 2008, the Apple’s application store now will be sporting a catalog of around 300,000 applications which have been downloaded for more than 7 billion times. The Google Inc. (GOOG), Intel Corp. (INTC) and Ford Motor Co. (F) are some of the companies who already have called developers to write programs, which can be used in combination with their products. The Global application market is expected to grow around $15.7 billion in 2013 from only $1.9 billion last year.
The Lexmark International Inc. (LXK) already offers around 60 applications, developed by their partners and by themselves, to be downloaded for their printers. According to the company those programs were downloaded around 100,000 times last year.
Lexmark also proclaimed that they don’t have any revenue-sharing model for outer developers till now, but the company will be adopting the model adopted by Google and Apple for their programs. Apple gives about 70% of the revenue generated from the applications to their respective developers; the remaining is paid for the maintenance of the application stores.
Lexmark’s application store will also be bringing the company in line with their major contenders HP, which has quickly added the capabilities for their printers to access the Internet and to print out information without a PC. One of the printers comes with a removable touchscreen tablet, which runs on Google’s Android mobile operating system, which can access the internet and can manage the printer at the same time.
It’s said that Lexmark’s application store will work with its four printers initially.
