Macys History The iconic mid to high level department store had its beginnings in 1858, when the American businessmen Rowland Hussey Macy decided to move away from a dry goods store he had earlier established in 1851 in Massachusetts and move to New York City and open a department store. The store was initially opened on 14th street and 6th avenue before moving on to the elite shopping district of the ‘Ladies Mile’ on 18th Street and Broadway. At one time Federated Deopartment the parent company of Macy's and Bloomingdales seemed untouchable in the retail sector. The company merged with May department stores and went through numerous name changes, converting all of May's stores to their Macy's brand. CEO of Federated Terry Lungren stated that because the Macy's name is so well recognized their is no need to keep names of regional stores such as Marshall fields and foley's which operated under May department stores. This is a little bit of a cheat, but here is a letter I wrote to Macy's this morning. They took down portions of a Pride display due to pressure from MassResistance, a fringe anti-gay group.
