David Moncoutie of Team Cofidis proved he is worthy of the "King of the Mountain" title by breaking away from the leaders and winning by nearly one minute of over second place Ezequiel Mosquera. A strong finish to earn the :08 second 3rd place bonus helped Alejandro Valverde gain some time on Robert Gesink as Cadel Evans of Team Silence-Lotto suffered a punctured tire 14 km from the finish causing him to lose over one minute on race leader Valverde.
