By arscherer on  From theswimmerscircle.com
200 BREASTSTROKE Cal junior Caitlin Leverenz has slowly been climbing the NCAA and World ranks over the course of the past three years. After a rough freshman season, she finished third in this event last year, and looks every bit the winner this year. Last year, Leverenz’ best was a 2:06.23. She’s already cut nearly a second off of that time to go 2:05.49, making her second-fastest of all time behind Rebecca Soni‘s 2:04.75. Breeja Larson of TAMU has far more speed than Leverenz, but they...Read Full Story

NCAA Day 3 Part 1: Legendary Record Goes Down, Leverenz Within a Fingertip of Soni

By arscherer on  From theswimmerscircle.com
The third and final night of the 2012 Women’s NCAA Championships saw some great races from the first half of tonight’s events. Starting right off the bat with the women’s 1650 free. It took 22 years (exactly, set 3/17/90) but the oldest record in the NCAA books finally went down tonight. North Carolina’s Stephanie Peacock was even born when Janet Evans set the mark at 15:39.14 but it would be the 19-year old lower Evans legendary mark to 15:38.79. Even more impressive is that Peacock just...Read Full Story

By arscherer on  From theswimmerscircle.com
Cal Berkeley was untouchable tonight. The fast swims started in the first event with Caitlin Leverenz just missing the NCAA record in the 400 I.M. and the Bear’s finishing the meet with a new NCAA and Pac-12 record in the 400 medley relay. It will be hard for the other schools to catch Cal at this point, as they end the night with close to a 100 point lead. 400 I.M. It was an absolute perfect swim by Cal Berkeley’s Caitlin Leverenz as she swam her way to a 3:58.46. Just missing Julia Smit’s...Read Full Story
