In January 2009 a California woman delivered the nation's second live-born set of octuplets, surprising herself and doctors. The set was made up of six boys and two girls, weight from 1 pound 8 ounces to 3 pounds 4 ounces, at the time of birth it was unknown whether or not all babies would survive.

The media has been reporting on the recent births of octuplets to a woman in California. The woman, who already had six children ranging in age from two to seven, decided she wanted more children. She resides with her parents and there is no father in the picture. Why would anyone with six very young children make a decision to have eight more? The octuplets born to a California woman in January of 2009. At first, doctors believed she was only carrying 7 babies, but when she delivered at 23 weeks she delivered a surprise eight baby.

The first set of octuplets born in the U.S. were delivered in Houston, TX in 1998, one of the infants died shortly after birth.
