Rally: Rally of the Midlands
Venue: Hinckley FC
Date: 18 / 19th June 2010
Young gun, Callum Black continued his learning curve on tarmac as he took to his local, Rally of the Midlands last weekend. Callum was using the rally to further his experience on tarmac, as a run in for the Isle of Man rally at the start of July.
Black started strongly on Friday night, finding himself 22nd overall (102 entries) and 1st in class. Callum was setting strong stage times, just a few seconds off WRC cars and much more capable machinery. Callum put into practice the tuition from former racing drive John Stevens had given him, getting the most out of the car – especially around Mallory Park where he recorded a top 10 stage time in the entire rally.
Callum made a bright start to day two, where he continued to move up the leader board, embarrassing many. On Saturday morning they visited Mira test facility where they completed a 14 mile stage, which required a huge amount of concentration on Callums behalf, as he had to identify the ‘make shift’ circuits splits and artificial chicanes. Callum still however was fastest in class as he was on every stage he did.
Unfortunately returning back to service before his final loop, the gearbox decided to jam in gear on the road section. Callum was lying in 14th OA, and comfortably leading the class before retirement.
Callum commented:
"I really enjoyed this weekend, it allowed me to try a few different things with the car, and I really feel its put me in good stead for the Manx in a few weeks. I was really pleased with my stage times, taking top 10 times is brilliant in a 1.4, it was just a shame the gearbox went because it would have been nice to finish in the top 10 overall in the rally. "
Callum will next be competing on the Isle of Man Rally on 9th / 10th June. It is another BRC Challenge round where Callum will try stretch his lead of the championship.
Callum is:
1st in BRC Challenge
1st in BRC Challenge Class
1st in BRC Challenge Junior
